Abstract

Modern, uniform, traffic-control devices, including computer-directed signal systems, effective traffic signing, well-defined pavement markings, and modern street lighting, as an essential part of a city’s transportation system, are presented. Modern traffic control installations are as important as the basic structural and geometric design of the arterial itself. Traffic control programs should be given adequate budgets to insure that motorists are provided with the best level of service that can be obtained from a well-engineered total design. Traffic control systems should be given greater emphasis in the future, as most traffic and highway engineers now know and appreciate the importance of modern traffic control methods in developing safe and efficient city traffic systems.
