Abstract

The article briefly describes a role of educational institution of higher education students’ competency in reading in the context of pursuing educational goals. Russian and English-language researchers’ views on reasons of low quality of academic and professionally aimed reading among young people are analyzed. Some factors of unacceptably poor effectiveness of search, selection, interpretation of information undertook by students individually are considered, as well as factors of improper use data took by students from published documents for handling of applied problems. Personally and professionally meaningful consequences of lowering of students’ competency in reading are listed. The authors argue an idea about throwing library specialists at the problem of developing students’ competency in reading through pedagogic technology.
