Abstract
A major aim of research on the biological effects of radiation is to understand and be able to model the chain of processes from the initial radiation insult to the final observable effects in mammalian cells. It is widely believed that for many cellular effects of interest damage to DNA is a critical element in this chain. We may wonder, then, how this acts as an intermediate step in determining the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of different ionising radiations.
