Abstract

When the French moralistJean de la Bruyere published his caricatures of collectors in Les Caracteres de Theophraste traduits du grec, ou les mrurs de ce siecle in 1688, he created indelible stereotypes which were to dominate the image of collecting in France over the next two centuries. In a section entitled 'De la mode', La Bruyere proposed his definition and criticism of the collecting impulse:
