Abstract
A wave of drug dependents among youngsters in Scandinavia has been met by differentiated treatment programs. First, and still most important, are the “dispersion” and “concentration” models found in psychiatric facilities. New types of out-patient services, field work, and treatment programs located in collectives are described. Idealistically oriented organizations have also initiated programs. Attitudes regarding coercive measures are described. Differences are found between treatment programs. Norway favors a specialized psychiatric treatment approach in medical institutions. In Sweden and Denmark, social-pedagogical treatment seems preferred while in Finland, programs are provided in alcoholic institutions. All Scandinavian countries, however are utilizing different models in confronting and attempting to combat the problem.
