Abstract

Three models for the desorption of molecules from surfaces are presented and discussed. The problem is calculated both classically and quantum-mechanically and the results are compared. Different types of exponentially shaped potential barriers serve as models for the surface potential. The translation-rotation coupling produces rotational cooling in both classical and quantum-mechanical alculations. The numerical results are compared to the etching reaction of fluorine with solid copper.
