Abstract

In many cases either the covalent or the geometric structure is the only one known. Structural knowledge of a protein can be knowledge of amino acid sequence (covalent structure), knowledge of three-dimensional (geometric) structure, or knowledge of both. There are many more covalent structures analyzed than geometric ones. On the other hand, there are about a dozen geometric structures in which the amino acid sequence is not yet known (80, 124, 217, 221, 236, 261, 303, 306, 307, 310, 313, 316). All elucidated covalent structures are compiled in the Atlas of Protein Sequence and Structure (20). A recent survey of analyzed geometric structures is given in Table 5–2.
