Abstract
AbstractThis paper reviews the experience of a small or team with the Rand-developed inventory model metric, from the time of initial investigation to the formal integration of the model into the management system of the Department of National Defence.The difficulties encountered over a surprisingly long period of eight years are discussed and it is stressed that the responsibility of the or scientist does not end with the validation of the model, or even with convincing the organization of its validity. He also must be prepared to help the managers find the procedures that will enable them to use the model conveniently. This experience illustrates that such models cannot be implemented quickly.Comments are also provided on the suitability of metric for defence problems and on extensions planned for the future.
