Abstract

The international community of scholars faces an unfinished task – how to derive maximal benefit from technology-based innovation. This is a difficult process to optimise, and we are doing a mediocre job. When we contrast the Ali Baba's cave of untapped technological potential, to the long list of unmet needs – economic, social and environmental – we realise that we do not yet have the 'Open sesame'. We do not have an adequate model of the National System of Innovation (NSI), in spite of a promising start 50 years ago. A new field of knowledge, Strategic Technology Analysis (STA), offers a way forward.
