Abstract
Significant investments are made by the healthcare industry globally in information technology (IT) to enhance patient outcomes, safety, efficiency, and financial performance. However, unlike other industries, the complexity of healthcare confounds the evaluation of the business value of these IT solutions. To date, it has been difficult to clearly articulate the true business value of IT in healthcare contexts. This study addresses this challenge by proposing a conceptual model for the business value of IT in the complex context of healthcare. This model is based on a systematic literature review in the area of using IT in healthcare and informed by two previous works to conceptualize IT investments in any given context (IT Portfolio) and various healthcare delivery activities/operations from a sociotechnical perspective (The Enterprise of Healthcare Delivery).
