Abstract

Abstract Lake seiching was modelled using the Finite Element Method combined with eigen‐analysis to calculate the natural modes of oscillation. The model results are compared with analytical solutions for some simple geometrical lakes and are found to be dependent on the grid fineness. The model was then applied to three lakes in the South Island of New Zealand: Lake Ohau, Lake Coleridge, and Lake Te Anau. The resulting periods of oscillation were in reasonable agreement with measured data. The model can be used for selecting new recorder sites, setting the recorder interval, and for removing the effect of seiche.
