Abstract

This paper is concerned with the description, for modelling purposes, of processes incorporating particulate solids. It is shown how the need to describe particle-size distributions inevitably leads to models written in terms of functions not variables. The use of symbolic manipulation packages in seeking full, analytical solutions to the models is explored. The pitfalls associated with the conventional approach of discretizing the size domain are described. In particular it is shown how the presence of numerical diffusion can impose a near-prohibitively fine grid spacing. The method of moments is used to develop short cut techniques that, for the two case studies considered, are virtually indistinguishable from the full models yet are computationally far simpler.
