Abstract

A mathematical model using the enthalpy method has been developed for the analysis of a unique solidification system, encompassing two different metals, one of which undergoes phase change. The model simulates heat transfer and fluid flow in a cylindrical crucible where a metal that does not exhibit phase change is immersed into a metal bath whose metal undergoes phase change. The specific case of an aluminum cylinder immersed into a lead bath was used to test the model. The validity of computational results was gauged by their agreement with existing experimental data. It was found that the model's predictions were in close agreement with the experimental data.
