Abstract

Simulation of a series-parallel hybrid electric vehicle is presented in this paper with practical considerations like vehicle weight, air drag and road incline. This incorporates the factors which necessitate the development of hybrid electric vehicles, their classification based on topology (series hybrid, parallel hybrid or series-parallel hybrid), comparison with internal combustion engines and fully electric vehicles. A detailed Simulink model was also used to accurately understand the working of a two-mode hybrid electric vehicle in a practical scenario. Also, strengths and weaknesses of various types of electrical machines used for traction drive in hybrid vehicles were studied.
