Abstract

Automotive systems have been facing electrification, where conventional mechanical systems are either aided by, or replaced by electrical systems and electronic control mechanisms. This trend is triggered by the need for faster, more precise control with high reliability and minimum expenditure of energy. Currently, the industry is witnessing advancements in steering assist systems, in which either hydraulic or electric power assistance is provided in the steering system. A complete replacement for the mechanical steering system is still unexplored. In this paper, a model for steer-by-wire has been developed. This model provides an electric motor actuated steering functionality, with road feedback and active steering. The model has been implemented in MATLAB to obtain the system response. The aforesaid features help the system stay ahead in technology, while also helping to bridge the gap between conventional steering systems and autonomous and semi-autonomous driving systems.
