Abstract
In this paper, the edge element concept is applied for the first time to model moving conductor eddy current problems. A new Galerkin weak formulation in terms of H is proposed and validated by a 2D example with analytical solutions. The problem of a unique solution and the cause of errors at high Peclet numbers are studied. It is shown that errors can be reduced through mesh refinement for the boundary layer region. In addition to the advantages associated with the use of edge elements, the most attractive feature of this new formulation lies in its possible elimination of the spurious numerical oscillations, which allows one to use the standard Galerkin method to solve the problem.
