Abstract

A population balance model is presented for describing the direct particle-to-particle heat transfer in fluid–solid processing systems. In developing the model, simple kinetic equations are assumed to describe the heat transfer process, but the particle–particle interactions are considered stochastic. A new approach is used to develop the population balance equation. The moment equations are derived and analysed. The time evolution of the population density function, determined by numerical solution of the integro-differential equation, is also presented.
