Abstract

We present a classical dynamical model to describe heavy-ion reactions with beam velocities comparable to the nucleonic Fermi velocity. The projectile is modelled as a cluster of α-particles, internal structure of the target taken into account via frictional forces. Detailed comparison to experiment is presented for the reaction 20Ne on 197Au. We identify pronounced dissipative dynamics and projectile break-up as important features of asymmetric heavy-ion reactions in this velocity regime.
