Abstract

Based on an experimental study into the frictional processes within rack-and-pinion steering systems as part of a joint project conducted by the Ford Research Laboratory Aachen GmbH and the Department of Vehicle Technology at the University of Darmstadt, a model of the steering system is presented which considers the special frictional characteristics at small deflection amplitudes. Mechanical models for the most important components are developed and validated at the component level. By combining each of the individual parts, a model of the entire steering system is built up. After validation at the system level, the model allows an analysis and optimisation of the steering system to be carried out with respect to the transmission of vibration.
