Abstract

In this paper, a special algebraic structure called path algebra or max-algebra is used for modelling and analysing nxm flexible manufacturing system (FMS) in which m jobs are processed on n machines. The pseudo-linear system model with finite buffer is established. The modelling allows for evaluating the dynamic behavior of the system under a deterministic and cyclic production process. Given any fixed processing time and routing of processing activities, the steady-state running rhythm of the system can be determined from eigenvalue of the system, i.e., the average weight of critical circuit of closed-loop network. Some results about the dynamic behavior of nxm flow-shop and job-shop FMS and illustrative examples are given.
