Abstract

This paper documents the process by which a model of the mining and upgrading operations of the Great Canadian Oil Sands Ltd., was evolved, and how it was used in deciding to proceed with a major expansion of the company's operation. The case is used to raise and discuss a number of issues concerning the successful and proper practice of Operational Research.
