Abstract

Two methods for modeling the effect of imperfect spanwise correlation of aerodynamic forces on the vortex-induced response of long-span flexible bridges are described. These methods are based on a semi-empirical non-linear mathematical model for the vortex-induced response of bluff bodies and results of wind-tunnel tests on bridge-deck section models. Application of these methods requires the knowledge of the spanwise behavior of aerodynamic forces on a prototype bridge undergoing vortex-induced oscillation. A method of approximating this behavior using measured spanwise correlation of forces on a two-dimensional, rigid section model is described. Examples of the application of the proposed methods are provided.
