Abstract

A mathematical model for the emulsion terpolymerization process was developed. The outputs of the model are the time evolution of the number of polymer particles, conversions of the monomers, latex solids content and terpolymer composition. The model was checked during the seeded semicontinuous emulsion terpolymerization of methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate and vinyl acetate carried out using high solids content latexes. The parameters of the model were estimated using all the experimental results by means of a direct search algorithm. An excellent fitting of the experimental data was achieved.
