Abstract

Safety evaluation of structural systems with realistic consideration of their behavior is becoming increasingly important to the engineering profession. Most of the planning and design of engineering systems is accomplished under conditions of uncertainty. Three major sources of uncertainty are (1) environmental uncertainty, (2) structural uncertainty and (3) modeling uncertainty. Structural uncertainty can be attributed to structure-related parameters such as the structural geometry, material properties, and boundary conditions. They are difficult to predict because of the influence of numerous factors during manufacturing, fabrication and construction. Structural uncertainty, specifically material uncertainty, is emphasized in this paper.
