Abstract

This paper presents a case study in which both limit equilibrium and numerical methods were used in slope stability analyses during design of a landfill closure. The limit equilibrium method was initially used to provide a quick assessment of the site and identify critical slopes with marginal factors of safety for further analysis using numerical modeling. Further, the paper presents differences between the two methods in their ability to predict the factor of safety and the use of the numerical modeling approach to evaluate several methods to stabilize the slopes.
