Abstract

An adsorption/desorption model of airborne dust on solar cell panels was proposed. This theoretical model successfully explained the time evolution of solar cell performance associated with dust accumulation in the Mars Pathfinder Mission. This model can be used to predict the long-term cell performance evolution simply by fitting two parameters to an initial-stage data. The saturation output power loss was estimated to be 15% for the solar cell used in the Mars Pathfinder, which indicates the potential of solar cells as a long-life power source on Mars.
