Abstract

The intermolecular exchange integrals between nonorthogonal molecular orbitals can be approximated by representing the region of overlap as a spherical Gaussian. This spherical Gaussian overlap approximation is shown to perform better, especially if localized orbitals are used, than the Mulliken approximation for a variety of water dimer conformations.
