Abstract

Environmental performance of manufacturing systems is a key performance indicator of manufacturing systems for sustainable society. Standards play a crucial role in systematic evaluation of the environmental performance of manufacturing systems as well as collection of the operational data of manufacturing systems used for novel operations management and control applications. In this study, the authors investigate related standards, ISO 20140 series and IEC 612264 series in particular, toward the digitalization of environmental performance evaluation of manufacturing systems from semantic and computational aspects. The investigation led to firstly the development of an information model to describe an environmental performance evaluation of a manufacturing system with context information, and secondly the development of a tool to build an instance of the model and compute an environmental KPI from the operational data measured in a manufacturing process based on the model. The study shows a case of successful integration of two standards to build an application to support sustainable manufacturing.
