Abstract

ABSTRACT Distinct element method and physical modeling are useful tools for study of response of discontinua. The base friction principle is used to reproduce the effects of gravity in two dimensional physical models. This paper concerns the characteristics of base friction modeling and CBLOCK calculation utilizing the distinct element algorithm. The response of several blocky models were analyzed numerically and experimentally using the methods. Some limitations of the base friction modeling were identified in duplicating the kinematic behavior.
