Abstract

AbstractAbstract — The nature and origin of creativity in the arts is an ancient question that continues to be puzzling. Modeling creativity as a system is an issue spanning most of this century. Among those with pragmatic concerns are university faculty and administrators charged with funding creative projects where artists have difficulty articulating their proposals and favorable outcomes are often difficult to anticipate. Interpretive Structural Modeling is used to give systemic form to the creative process as developed by five faculty in the “creative” areas. A simultaneous process involving multiple events occuring continuously is identified as the dominant nature of the creative process. The dilemmas involved in modifying grant systems to allow for the creative process in the arts are discussed.
