Abstract

Monolith are blocks consisting of large number of straight and parallel channels. Recently usage of metallic monolith for catalytic reactions are reported. These metallic monoliths provide excellent heat transfer properties which can effectively be utilized for highly exothermic reactions in catalytic packed bed reactor. We have developed a model for multi-tubular reactor of phthalic anhydride production utilizing these structured metallic monolith. The developed model on simulation reveals minimization of hot spot formation and hence substantial reduction of run-away conditions within the reactor. It has also been shown that usage of these novel monolth can increase the productivity of plant manifold.
