Abstract
Recently, with the rapid development of wireless communication technology and the publishing of IEC 61850 in power system, protection and control application with wireless communication scheme for smart power distribution system have been promoted. Even though the interoperability issues of wireless communication between different intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) from different venders have been solved, the overall performance evaluation and the extensibility of networking strategy for IEC 61850 wireless communication scheme remain unresolved. In this paper, a modeling of IEC 61850 for protection and control in smart power distribution system based wireless communication network using the OPNET Modeler is implemented, including information flow model and IED model. These configurable wireless communication models make it easy to establish IEC 61850 WLAN wireless communication network for communication-assisted protection and control design and evaluation in smart power distribution system. Technical approaches to evaluate the overall performance such as end-to-end delay, throughout, packet loss rate, etc. are also provided in this paper considering different engineering scenes. In the way, the speed and the reliability of IEC 61850 WLAN wireless communication network can be analyzed quantitatively.
