Abstract

Penetration of micro grids energized by renewable energy onto the conventional grid answers the global energy crisis and its environmental impacts. This paper focuses on the modeling and simulation of an Energy Aware Smart Micro Grid (SMG) system using the M-file in MATLAB® 2010A. SMG is made to be energy aware by the Dynamic Energy Management System (DEMS) that monitors its status at regular intervals and takes necessary actions based on the Dynamic Energy Management (DEM) scheme. This scheme controls the charge-discharge transactions on the installed storage modules in order to oppose the frequency excursions. The operation of DEMS enabled SMG penetrating the power grid is simulated and verified. When several such DEMS enabled resilient SMGs capable of handling the adverse grid conditions are penetrating the legacy grid, a greener grid is evolved.
