Abstract

This paper investigates the dynamic operation of Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) based on a model comprising a multilevel 48-pulse Gate Turn-Off thyristor (GTO) voltage source converter for reactive power compensation and voltage stabilization of electric power transmission and distribution systems. Multi-pulse converters are made up from several three level voltage source converter modules switching at the fundamental frequency, but properly phase shifted to produce a nearly sinusoidal output voltage and low harmonic content. The analysis and complete digital simulation of the STATCOM is performed in the MATLAB/Simulink environment using the Power System Blockset (PSB).
