Abstract
Two multivariable models for the hot rolling mill at the Danish Steel Works Ltd. have been derived and identified. The purposes of the models are to: 1) describe the process dynamics; and 2) estimate the plate thickness. The basic model structures are derived using physical relations for the process. The input signals for the models are measured during normal operation of the process. Since it is not possible to measure the process output directly, it is measured after the rolling. The two measurements are combined by solving an optimization problem. The two dynamic models are identified and satisfactory results are obtained. This indicates that the physical model structure is sensible. Furthermore multivariable models for controller design and implementation are now available for future work.
