Abstract

This paper addresses the issue of modeling and control of shape memory actuators exemplified here by a SMA-wire actuator. After some preliminary considerations and some briefly reviewed details related to the constitutive modeling of shape memory materials, this article focuses on the Preisach hysteresis modeling in terms of presentation and comparative discussion of different modeling approaches in accordance to different Preisach measures (or weighting functions in the Preisach plane), and considers the position control using conventional feedback strategies. The effectiveness of the considered modeling approaches and the closed-loop performance achieved by using conventional controllers are demonstrated by simulations and in part by experiments.
