Abstract

The paper presents a mathematical model that simulates the behavior of the urban water distribution networks (UWDN) during a period of intermittent water supply (IWS) and investigates the effects of such policies on the system's condition and mortality rate by studying the change in the rate of occurrence of failures, using statistical and survival analysis. The analysis, based on a dataset from a local Water Board, takes into account information related with the breakage incidents as well as external factors and vulnerability assessment. The results show an increase in the number of water-leak incidents and a deterioration of the network condition not related to aging, which in turn demonstrates that IWS does affect negatively the vulnerability of UWDNs.
