Abstract

The goal of fault monitoring is to detect when a system has deviated beyond its correct operating regime. Prompt detection of deviations in manufacturing processes can reduce system downtime, prevent extensive equipment damage and insure consistent product quality. To monitor a system, however, a specification of correct or incorrect operation is necessary. In this chapter we examine the use of various process models as the specification of correct operation of manufacturing systems in which on-line information about the system consists of asynchronous discrete signals such as controller and sensor signals and network messages. In particular, we describe behavioral models that were developed for use in fault monitoring as a specification of ranges of correct system operation for systems with both discrete and continuous observations [1–3].
