Abstract

Recent research has demonstrated that little validation is carried out during and after the building of mathematical models for decision support. This may not have mattered much when the systems were small and limited to aiding a single manager. However, as the tools available to create quantitative and qualitative computer decision aids develop and become both more widely available, are developed by non-specialist information systems staff, and used at higher levels within organisations, the need to validate systems becomes more pressing, and the penalties for not so doing become potentially more severe. This paper describes the types of validation that should be performed.
