Abstract

It is shown that the possibilities offered by magnetic beta spectrometers whose electron optical diagram is similar to the diagram of optical spectrometers can be considerably broadened by using variable field distribution lenses for collimation and focusing. A Model UMB-1M spectrometer is described whose resolving power attains 0.014% at a solid angle Ω = 0.02% from 4 π and a source measuring 12×0.4 mm 2. The maximum solid angle is 2% from 4 π the resolving power under these conditions being 0.6% at a source and entrance slit measuring 15×1 mm 2. An experiment is described aimed at increasing the spectrometer luminosity by means of electrical matching of electron optical images of several sources. Calculated characteristics of Model UMB-2 spectrometer are given.
