Abstract
Abstract Dactylis glomerata pollen grains harvested in non polluted country side fields were exposed to different treatments such as car exhaust gas, cigarette smoke, UV light and ozone. The effects of these treatments were first studied with Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX) in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The exine ionic composition was analysed at different sites on the pollen surface. A significant modification of the respective ions analysed was observed. K+ which was the most abundant ion in untreated pollen left its predominance to CI- in the treated pollen, with the exception of UV illumination which induced no exine ion content modifications. The pollen allergen content was studied by the nitrocellulose immunoprint technique after agarose isoelectric focusing separation. No detectable modification in the allergen isoelectric points were seen after the different pollen treatments. However some decrease in the extracted allergen amounts were noticed mainly after car ex...
