Abstract

Geogrid is widely used in the cushion of composite foundation or embankment supported by rigid or rigid-flexible piles. However, the researches on the deformation behavior of geogrid are limited. Some model tests on the behavior of geogrid supported by rigid-flexible piles were designed and completed under static load. The variations of geogrid strain at different locations with time were analyzed based on the model test results. The test results showed that the deformation behavior of geogrid varies with the location. The strain of geogrid increased with the applied load. The strain changing law of geogrid on the top of pile or soils varying with time was similar to that of the static applied load. However, the strain changing law of geogrid on the pile side was not similar to that of the applied load. The strain of geogrid at the pile side was larger than that on the top of rigid or flexible pile, and it was also larger than that on the soil among the piles. The more close to the pile (cap) side, the larger the geogrid strain. The geogrid deformation may be caused by the differential settlement among the pile and soil or by the membrane tension effect of the geogrid on the pile cap. This is very useful for the application of geogrid in the geotechnical engineering.
