Abstract
The magnetic field profile in a crystal of finite thickness has been evaluated numerically using the relaxation method. A field-dependent permeability that was diamagentic belowHc1 and had a small positive discontinuity at 1.33Hcl was assumed. TheB field perpendicular to the surface was calculated as a function of applied field and its form compared with the experimentally observed feature attributed to flux-line melting. It is concluded that the associated magnetisation and entropy changes are much larger than was previously believed.
