Abstract

The linear graph technique is used to derive an equivalent electrical circuit diagram (involving capacitances, inductances, resistances, transformers, gyrators and transducers), of the hydro-mechanical automotive power steering system. The model includes six independent lumped energy storage elements: 1. (1) The inertia of the steering wheel and column. 2. (2) The rotary stiffness of the steering column. 3. (3) The inertia of the spool valve slider assembly. 4. (4) The retaining spring of the spool valve slider assembly. 5. (5) The mass of the hydraulic actuator and steering link assembly. 6. (6) The return springs in the steering link assembly. The order of the system is therefore six, corresponding to the number of lumped independent energy storage elements. The six first-order ordinary differential equations are then derived from the linear graph model.
