Abstract
A general model that does not depend upon a specific mechanism is proposed for describing the retention of ionic solutes in partition chromatography in the presence of electrolytes. The effect of various types of 1∶1 and 1∶2 eluent electrolytes on the retention of inorganic ions on a cross-linked polyacrylamide is successfully explained in terms of the model. Capacity factors of ionic solutes can be estimated semiempirically on the basis of the theoretical equation presented.
