Abstract

An antiferro-quadrupole interaction model with Γ 3 symmetry of localized f-electrons is proposed for describing the multiple ordered phases in skutterudite PrFe 4 P 12 . Ferro-type interactions between the dipoles as well as between certain octupoles are additionally introduced and vanishingly small energy separation of low-lying crystalline electric field (CEF) levels Γ 1 and Γ 4 ( 1 ) is assumed. The model reproduces qualitatively the high-field phase that appears only for magnetic field direction (1 1 1), in addition to the low-field phase.
