Abstract

Microalgae-bacteria (MAB) systems are a useful technology for treating domestic wastewater. They combine the oxygen producing capability of microalgae with the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total nitrogen degradation efficiency of aerobic bacteria in a synergistic manner. This work proposes a new mathematical model that incorporates two recently observed phenomena: photoinhibition during bacterial nitrification and heterotrophic growth of microalgae in the dark. The model is corroborated with experimental data, showing good prediction capabilities.
