Abstract

An attempt is carried out to produce some tangling and opening parts in multi-filament yarn without conventional interlacers; a truck on which the yarn is fastened at its both ends passes through twice under an air jet nozzle to expose two parts of the yarn to an air jet. The effects of the following factors such as the nozzle traverse distance, the air pressure, the nozzle height and the guide distance on the length of an opening part, the probability of two productions and so forth are analyzed. Results obtained are as follows.(1) For relatively small nozzle traverse distances, only one opening part is always produced though two different positions of the yarn are exposed to the air jet. With increasing the nozzle traverse distance, the length of the opening part increases. On the other hand, for relatively large nozzle traverse distances, the air jet acting on two positions of the yarn always produces two opening parts. For intermediate nozzle traverse distances, such an indeterminate phenomenon as producing one or two opening parts is observed. The probability of two productions has been introduced to make a quantitative analysis of this phenomenon. The probability of two productions shows a monotonic increase with increasing the nozzle traverse distance under all experimental conditions.(2) The air pressure has little effect on the yarn shape and the probability of two productions.(3) The nozzle height has a large effect on the yarn shape and the probability of two productions. Within this experiment, as the nozzle height becomes small, the length of an opening part and also the nozzle traverse distance at which the probability of two productions is 100% become short.(4) The guide distance has no effect on the yarn shape and the probability of two productions.(5) Within this experiment, the nozzle traverse distance at which two opening parts are always produced takes the minimum value of 10mm when the nozzle height is 2mm.(6) An expression for the number of tangles can be presented by using the nozzle traverse distance, the production probability and the probability of two productions, and in this case the maximum number of tangles is estimated at 70/m from the expression. This value is valid in comparison with results obtained with a conventional interlaces.
