Abstract

A simple but physically transparent model has been proposed to estimate the displacement threshold energy of atoms in pure transition metals by means of the electronic band picture of the outer electrons. By using this model experimental data so far obtained in the literature can be explained quantitatively for most elements in the transition series metals. In ferromagnetic metals such as iron, the ferromagnetic exchange band splitting is taken into account independently, and the anomalously low threshold energy can also be explained.
