Abstract

Chirally organized macrodomains in granal thylakoid membranes and in isolated chlorophyll a/b light harvesting complex associated with photosystem II (LHCII) have been shown to undergo light-induced reversible structural changes [1,2]. They manifest themselves in reversible changes in the psi-type circular dichroism (CD) bands, i.e. they originate from structural rearrangements affecting the long range chiral order of the chromophores in the macrodomains [3]. (Psi, polymerization or salt-induced.) Further, since the excitonic CD bands have been shown not to be noticeably affected, it can be assumed that the structural changes are confined to reorganizations in the macroaggregates without significant alterations in the complexes constituting the macroaggregates.
